For many years, three Virginia historical magazines devoted a substantial amount of space to genealogy. These magazines, with their dates of genealogical coverage, are The William and Mary College Quarterly (1892-1943), The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (1893-1977), and the now defunct Tyler's Quarterly (1919-1952). These periodicals published thousands upon thousands of birth, marriage, and death records, wills, land records, military records, and census records and similar enumeration lists. The three great Virginia periodicals also featured linked family histories (most of them spanning several centuries) of thousands of allied families. The majority of these family history articles were written and edited by leading authorities on Virginia genealogy.
