Newton Township, originally part of Old Gloucester County in West New Jersey, was the site of some of the earliest settlements along the Delaware River. The area today roughly encompasses the city of Camden plus Haddon Township within Camden County. Lest the founding fathers of Newton Township be as forgotten as the county they settled, John Clement has prepared a number of detailed genealogical and biographical sketches of these patriarchs and matriarchs. Each sketch traces the principal and his families members through several generations, beginning with the family's place of origin or first appearance in Newton Township. The volume concludes with a collection of marriage entries-a number from Quaker meetings-for Burlington, Salem, Newton, Chester, Evesham, and Woodbury. The principal families covered in the sketches are as follows: Albertson, Bates, Burroughs, Carpenter, Champion, Clements, Cole, Collins, Cooper, Eastlack, Ellis, Estaugh, Gardiner, Gill, Graysbury, Hillman, Hinchman, Howell, Hugg, Kaighn, Kay, Lippincott, Mathews, Matlack, Mickle, Morgan, Newbie, Nicholson, Sharp, Shivers, Spicer, Stacy, Stokes, Thackara, Tomlinson, Turner, Woods, and Zane.
