From 1865 to 1871, the U.S. Quartermaster's Department published the 27-volume Roll of Honor series, a listing of the names of over 300,000 Union soldiers buried in national cemeteries, garrison cemeteries, soldiers' lots, and private graveyards, more than two-thirds of the men having been disinterred from their original burial sites on or near the various battlefields. All volumes (called "numbers") in this extremely scarce series were published as battlefield sites were surveyed, graves exhumed, and bodies reburied--state by state and cemetery by cemetery. The burial records within each of the volumes are arranged in alphabetical order by cemetery. Thus, No. I contains alphabetical listings of soldiers buried in Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia, while No. III is composed entirely of the 12,000 Union soldiers who died in the notorious Andersonville prison camp. Every name and every cemetery found in this consolidated volume and the nine additional consolidated volumes of our Roll of Honor reprint (see Items 5952, 5953, 5954, 5955, 5956, 5957, 5958, 5959, and 5965) may be found in the new Index to the Roll of Honor (see Item 5966).

The Roll of Honor provides, generally, the soldier's name, rank, regiment, company, and date of death, with the names of the deceased arranged alphabetically by burial site. Since it is doubtful whether more than a handful of libraries have any of the volumes in the series or whether there are many genealogists or historians who are aware of the existence of the work at all, we are confident that all researchers with antecedents stretching back to the Civil War, and all Civil War enthusiasts, will welcome this important reprint.

These volumes are also available on our Family Archive CD 7351.
