Hampshire County was formed from the Virginia counties of Augusta and Frederick in 1754. Later, during the American Civil War, it became the first Virginia county wholly in the territory that is now West Virginia. Mrs. Vicki Horton is the compiler of a number of Hampshire County genealogical source record collections, six of which are now available from Clearfield Company (see also Items 9734, 9340, 9147, 9336, and 9335).
Hampshire County Records is a miscellany compiled from various sources, including order books, chancery books, guardian bonds, and newspaper abstracts. The vast majority of the entries refer to events or relationships prior to 1865. Despite its miscellaneous character, most of the cases cited establish connections between several generations of family members, and even the more recent newspaper abstracts--taken from the booklet, the Owl Print, consist mostly of notices of marriage and death.
