This volume compiles Bills of Sale, Certificates of Freedom, Certificates of Slavery, Emancipations and Manumission found in Volume 2 of the District of Columbia Land Indexes, and covers the period from 1806 and into 1816. It contains 102 pages of index and 180 pages of abstracts. Over 680 entries are abstracted in the endnotes. Also, surname lists of enslaved/free persons of color and slaveholders for both Vol. 1 and 2 are included (see the first volume in this series, Freedom and Slavery Documents in the District of Columbia Recorder of Deeds Office, Vol. 1, 1792-1806). A third volume, Freedom and Slavery Documents in the District of Columbia, Vol. 3, 1816-1822, has recently been published by Otter Bay Books. Contact the author for information about this volume.
