In 1995, Clearfield Company published the first volume of Maud Pugh's detailed genealogical account of the early settlers of the Capon Valley in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). We are pleased to announce that the second volume of Capon Valley. Its Pioneers and Their Descendants, 1698 to 1940 is available at this time. While Volume I began with a brief history of the Capon Valley, a majestic area set in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia, Volume II, which in no way duplicates the earlier volume, provides historical background on the formation of Hampshire County, road construction, the establishment of churches, schools and newspapers, public officials, and related subjects. The author has also abstracted a number of early marriage records and deeds, as well as a list of Capon Valley residents who served in the Confederate Army. Like its companion volume--though half again as long--the bulk of this one consists of genealogical essays and Bible records referring to the pioneering families of the region. Following is a list of the families appearing in Volume II, each of which was absent from Volume I or is here represented by lines not found in the earlier work: Ambler, Anderson, Baylis, Brill, Cape, Carter, Cooper, Cowgell, Deaver, Delaplain, Edwards, Emmett, Frye, Garvin, Giffin, Gothrop, Haines, Harloe-Kelso, Hayden, Hietts, Hockman, Hugh-Ogden, Johnson, Kackley, Klein, La Follette, Largent, McCook, McDonald, McKee, McKeever, Malick, Mauk, Milleson, Nixon, Orndorff, Park, Pennington-Ridgeway, Pepper, Powell, Reid, Sine, Slane, Smith, Snapp, Stump, Swisher, Tate, Ullery, and Williamson. Also included are photographs of a number of Capon Valley descendants.
This volume is also available on our Family Archive CD 7520.
