Southampton County was established in 1749, from that part of Isle of Wight County south and west of the Blackwater River. A small portion of Southampton would later be donated to form Greensville County; otherwise, Southampton Countyโs boundaries have not changed appreciably since its inception.
This work presents full abstracts of all deeds found in Deed Book 1, the oldest collection extant, and it contains unusually detailed references to former owners, will bequests, family relationships, and deeds of sale. When used in conjunction with existing abstracts of wills for Southampton County, this work will resolve many issues concerning migration to North Carolina, as well as settlers in Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, Virginia. Complete with name and place indexes, as well as a select bibliography, this book refers to about 2,000 of the earliest inhabitants of Southampton County.
