This is the sixth in an eight-volume series pertaining to the early genealogy of Surry and Isle of Wight counties. The genealogies trace the various families in a six-generation format that includes all records, documents, and discussions of descent. Each genealogy begins with the immigrant ancestor and traces all descendants, male and female, down to the children of the fifth generation. The other books in the series consist of abstracts or transcriptions of the records of Isle of Wight County.
This volume is a verbatim transcription of Will and Deed Book 1 and brings to light many early Isle of Wight County documents never seen before--in print or in abstracts. Documents include deeds, powers of attorney (many from merchants in Bristol), depositions concerning age, some wills, bills, and marriage contracts. With these records was a 32-page collection of deeds for the year 1715, and Mr. Brayton has abstracted them at the conclusion of the text. Researchers will find references to between 5,000 and 6,000 17th- and early 18th-century inhabitants of Isle of Wight County in the name index. The book also includes an index to places and a bibliography.
