This original Clearfield publication is an examination of
the early families and history of the North Fork of Long
Island, New York, and its neighboring islands from the
earliest settlement through the Revolutionary War.
Following an introductory chapter on the founding of
Southold, Mrs. Jacobson has compiled genealogies on the
following families who settled in Southold during the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: Brockett, Browne,
Budd, Conkling, Folger, Gardiner, Hallock, Horton,
Landon, Moore, Paine/Payne, Sylvester, Tuttle/Tuthill,
Underhill, Vail, Warren, and Youngs. Genealogists will
want to study the appendix to the volume, which consists
of excerpts from deeds, wills and other legal documents,
tombstone inscriptions, census records, and other source
records pertaining to colonial Southold. The work
concludes with a bibliography and a surname index.
