In 1912 the State of Kentucky passed a law granting pensions to former Confederate veterans or their widows who resided in the state. This book is a brief history of the pension law and a subsequent constitutional challenge to the law in the Kentucky Courts.
To obtain a pension, the Veteran-applicant had to fill out an application form that included his name, military information, and date and place of birth. Additionally, some of the files include death information on the Veteran.
A Widow-applicant had to list her name (including maiden name), her date and place of birth, the name of her husband, the date and place where they were married, his military information, his date and place of birth, and his date and place of death. Additionally, some files include death information
on the Widow.
All of the military and genealogical information has been abstracted and is included in an alphabetical listing of each pensioner. Additionally, there is an index of pensioners by the county in which they applied; all 120 counties are represented. Pensioners are also indexed by Kentucky military units and out-of-state military units.
This book will be valuable to the Civil War Genealogist because, for many former Veterans, this is the only record of the service. Additionally, Kentucky did not formally keep vital statistics until 1911, and this book includes much valuable genealogical data on the applicants.
