Search Tips |
There are two search boxes in the left column of every page on the site, which allow you to search our catalog in a variety of ways: Name Search. Our Name Search searches two separate databases: Database 1 searches the indexes from 75 of our CDs, which contain 738 of our best reference books. The search results from this database will show you both the CD and the books within that CD in which your name was found. Database 2 searches for your Surname in the titles, subtitles, and keywords of our publications that are not contained in a CD. Also included in this search are the major surnames associated with over 450 family histories published by Gateway Press.
The first database allows you to search on a Surname plus a Given Name, while the second database only searches for Surnames. More detail about our Name Search is available on the Learn More About Search Results page. Because the Name Search is a work in progress, it is entirely possible that the ancestor(s) you are looking for may be found in the books that have not as yet found their way into our name index search engine. So, before you leave www.genealogical.com, we encourage you to browse our collection by state or country, or search by author's last name, title, or other search category. If the geographical and/or chronological coverage of one or more books corresponds to that of your forebears, it may just contain the evidence you are looking for!
The “Or Search By” box, under the Name Search section, has a "drop-down" menu that allows you to choose various search criteria. Simply choose the type of search you want, then enter the word, phrase, title, author's last name, or number that best meets your needs and click "SEARCH."
Here are basic rules that will help you get better results:
Title: This search will find a complete or partial title. Your best chance for success is in entering a single word or phrase. For example, if you know the word "Civil War" is in the title, try entering just the phrase "Civil War" (without quotes) or just the word "War."
Author: At the present time, the author search allows you to search only by surname. Keywords: This performs a search of book and CD titles and authors, and their catalogue descriptions. Single words increase your chance of success. ISBN: Enter the ISBN to bring up the book or CD you are searching for. Enter the ISBN without spaces, with or without hyphens (e.g. 0806311940 or 0-8063-1194-0).
Item #: Enter the product item number to bring up the book or CD you are searching for.
