What is the book about? What geographical area is covered? What years are covered? Is the book indexed? What edition is it? How many pages? Is the book available? What is the price? We are happy to provide information that will help you decide which of our publications will aid your genealogical research. You'll find the answers to these questions when you perform a search on our website. You can conduct a search by title, author, keyword, item number, or ISBN. Search results include the title, author, year of publication, binding, price, availability, and a description of the book. You can also conduct a search by names. A Name Search covers names in most of our CDs and the majority of our reference books.
If I contact your office, will you check a book's index for surnames? Will you tell me what is in the book's Table of Contents? Our office staff receives phone calls from all over the country (and the world)! We handle orders over the phone and will answer book-related questions if time permits. If you e-mail us with your query, we will respond within 2-3 business days.
If a book is out of print, when will it be available again? We try to keep high-demand books in print at all times. Many books that go out of print will be reprinted in 9-12 months, depending on the number of requests we receive. E-mail us with your name, address, and request and we will notify you when an out-of-print title has been reprinted.
Is the CD indexed? Our Family Archive CDs are engineered by Genealogy.com (formerly Broderbund Software) and contain images of our most frequently consulted books. All of our CDs contain multiple works and employ a single integrated index. Perform a Search on our website or browse through our CD-ROM section for information about a specific CD. A CD is a durable, inexpensive way to own several of our books in electronic format!
What are the system requirements for using your Family Archive CDs? You must have a CD-ROM drive, and in order to read the CD, you must use Family Archive Viewer, version 4.0 or higher (which is available from us on CD or as a free download from http://www.genealogy.com/dlfav6.html) or version 4.0 or higher of Family Tree Maker™ for Windows, which is available from http://www.familytreemaker.com/. Please note that the Family Archive Viewer and Family Tree Maker are not available for Macintosh.
I can't open the Family Archive CD on my computer. To access the information on a Family Archive CD, follow the steps below (these instructions do not apply to CDs produced by Ancestry.com or read by Acrobat Reader):
To access information on our Family Archive CDs using the Family Archive Viewer: 1. Install the Family Archive Viewer CD or download it from http://www.genealogy.com/dlfav6.html. 2. Insert the CD you purchased from us in your computer's CD-ROM drive. (If you have 2 or more CD-ROM drives, the CD must be placed in the first one.) 3. The CD should open automatically, but users of later versions of the Family Archive Viewer have to click the icon showing a CD and magnifying glass (the "FamilyFinder" icon) in the top toolbar to read the CD. 4. Otherwise, when you start your Family Archive Viewer Program, a screen entitled "About this Family Archive" should appear. Click "OK" where prompted. (If the "Files Currently on the CD" screen appears, minimize it and go to the "About this Family Archive" screen instead.)
To access information on our Family Archive CDs using Family Tree Maker 1. Start your Family Tree Maker and open a Family File. (If the program is already running, skip to Step 2.) 2. Insert the CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive. (If you have 2 or more CD-ROM drives, the CD must be placed in the first one.) 3. From the View menu, select Family Finder, or select the Family Finder icon from the toolbar.
To Search The CD for Names, select the Search Expert button in the top right of your screen, then select "Search this archive for someone NOT from your Family File." You can also search for names by using the Index.
If you continue to have problems reading your CD, phone 1-800-262-3787 (1-800-Ancestry). Press option 1. Once the purpose of your call is established, you will be transferred to tech support.

What is your return policy? How do I return a book or CD? We have been supplying individuals and libraries with quality publications for many years, but it is always possible that a damaged or defective book may be sent to you. We apologize for such an inconvenience and will gladly make an exchange. When you need to return a damaged or incorrect item, please send it to the following address:

If you have questions about our return policy, please contact our offices by phone, mail, or e-mail. As with any publication, our books and CDs are not sold on pre-approval. Therefore a re-stocking fee of 10% of the purchase price ($5.00 minimum) will be charged on all returns other than mis-shipments or damaged items.
What are the shipping options? How long will it take to receive my order? As a rule, within the U.S. we ship via United States Postal Service (USPS) Book Rate or United Parcel Service (UPS) ground. You can expect your order to arrive within 7-14 business days if you choose USPS shipping, and 3-5 days for UPS. If you do not see the shipping option that you prefer, you may contact our business office at 1-800-296-6687, Monday-Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST. Why am I not receiving e-mail notifications when I request a new password, sign up for a new account, or sign up to receive your "Genealogy Pointers" newsletter? If you have enabled spam filters or junk mail filters in your e-mail software, you may not be receiving e-mail messages sent from our website. To ensure that you receive all order confirmation and shipment e-mails, as well as correspondence pertaining to customer service or new password requests, you should add the following address to your approved list: webmaster@genealogical.com. If you have subscribed to "Genealogy Pointers," you should add tips@genealogical.com to your approved list to ensure that you receive the newsletters you have requested.
Can customers visit your offices and browse through the books? While you are welcome to check our in-house shelf copies in our front office, we do not have research and sales facilities. If, during your visit, you see a book you wish to purchase, you can place an order and a copy of the book will be shipped to you from our warehouse.
Where are you located? What are your office hours? Our address is 3600 Clipper Mill Road, Suite 260, Baltimore, MD 21211. Our office is located in Meadow Mill at Woodberry, which originally was the London Fog factory. We are open 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday through Friday (closed federal holidays).

I have an idea/manuscript for a genealogical reference book. What are your submission criteria? We accept unsolicited manuscripts for review. First, send a letter of introduction to the Marketing Director at our offices along with a topic description, an outline, and sample pages or chapters. Indicate the approximate length of the book and provide pertinent background information. For example, if your book concerns marriages in Georgia, give the location, dates, number of marriage records included, and the source of your information. The Marketing Director will contact you after your letter has been received. You can also go to Gateway Press Inc.
I want to self-publish my family history (or memoirs, local or military history, poetry, etc.). How can you help me? Our sister company, Gateway Press (located at our address), specializes in helping first-time authors produce well-designed, long-lasting hardback books. Call us at 410-837-8271 and ask for Ann Hughes at extension 204.
Do you sell genealogical charts and other supplies? We do not sell stand-alone genealogical charts. However, our book Paper Trees: Genealogical Clip-Art, by Tony Matthews, is a collection of decorative hand-drawn family trees that might interest you; and two of our books by noted author William Dollarhide--Managing a Genealogical Project and Genealogy Starter Kit--contain numerous charts and forms that are specially designed to be photocopied and used as often as the need arises.
Several online companies including www.Everton.com and www.NGSgenealogy.org carry standard charts and supplies. You will find other listings when you enter "genealogical supplies" in your favorite Internet search engine.
Do you search for old books for customers? We do not provide a book search service. We suggest that you visit www.TuttleBooks.com, a company that will hunt for old and rare genealogy books. You will find other companies when you enter "rare book search" in your favorite Internet search engine.
Does your company conduct professional genealogical research? We are primarily a book publisher and not a genealogical research organization. Organizations including the Association of Professional Genealogists (www.APGen.org), Board for Certification of Genealogists (www.bcgcertification.org/), and the Family History Library of the LDS Church (35 North West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150) can help you identify professional and/or certified genealogical consultants and researchers. You can also contact genealogical and historical societies in your geographical area of interest for names of professional genealogists.
What are some of the most helpful genealogical websites? The Internet is facilitating genealogical research by delivering information with incredible speed. There are a multitude of sites that provide genealogists with research assistance and data, and the number is increasing daily! Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites on the Internet (www.CyndisList.com) is the gateway to Internet genealogy, and is the most comprehensive list of genealogy websites available. At present it contains links to nearly 250,000 websites including societies, groups, libraries, archives, museums, newspapers, newsletters, family associations, mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and governmental organizations.
